The First Commandment

The first commandment can be found in the book of Exodus chapter 20. It's the first commandment given to Moses by God, and it deals with our relationship with God as being first and above any other relationships we might have.

“Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”

Exodus 20:3

To understand what this commandment is about, first we need to understand who God is. The verse tells us to have no other gods before God, but who is God according to the Bible?

1. He is the creator of all things

John 1:3 - “All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.”

2. He is love

1 John 4:8 - “He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.”

3. He is our savior through Jesus Christ

1 John 3:16 - “Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.”

4. He is our rock (protector and keeper)

Psalms 18:2 – “The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.”

Conclusion

God should always come first and above everything and everyone in our lives. That’s what it means to have no other gods before Him. He deserves to be worshiped, obeyed, loved, praised, and trusted.
