Fourth Commandment - The Ten Commandments KJV

The fourth commandment is given in Exodus 20:8, and it's the last one that deals with one's direct relationship by God in the ten commandments.

“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.”

Exodus 20:8

Understanding this Commandment

This commandment deals with obedience and trust a believer should have in God.

Obedience, because it's a direct commandment dealing with not working that day. Trust, because not working a day per week, especially in the old times, could be difference between having and not having the provision needed, so it requires a real trust in God that all needs will be met by Him.

Background

The Jews in the Old Testament times would go to the synagogues on Saturdays. That was the day that God had commanded them to rest from work, so the people would go to church and worship God on this day. This was their day of rest because God took the seventh day (Saturday) to rest after He had created everything, and therefore, it was a way of celebrating God’s creation.

Why Don't Baptists Worship on Saturdays?

Baptist Christians don’t worship on Saturdays. We serve on Sundays, because Jesus was risen on a Sunday, and today we are no longer under the law, but under grace (Romans 6:14). Thus, we celebrate Jesus’s going to the cross, dying for our sins, and resurrecting, and that's why Sunday is the primary day of worship for us.
